Free Museums in Madrid

Whether you are visiting Madrid or live here when you discover the wide range of museums you can visit, your face will light up just thinking about the possibility of going to any of them.  But, if you stop and think a few minutes .... Uff, which one to choose, when to go, at what's the best time?

At Kids in Madrid we want to inform our readers that all museums in Madrid have at least one time in the week when there is no entry charge.  In this article we provide details of the museums and the  days and time when you can visit for free.

National Prado Museum: Spain’s national art gallery located in the heart of Madrid.  Free from Monday to Saturday between 18:00 and 20:00, and Sundays and holidays from 17:00 to 19:00. Usually very busy on Sunday during the day.

Reina Sofía National Art Museum: Modern art museum where you can see Picasso’s Guernica.  Free from 19:00 to 21:00 on Mondays and from Wednesday to Saturday (on Tuesdays the museum is closed) and Sundays from 15:00 to 19:00.

Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum: Offers a mix of beautiful traditional and modern art.  Free on Mondays from 12:00 to 16:00.

Sorolla Museum: Featuring the work of Joaquín Sorolla in the building that actually used to be his home.  Free on Saturdays from 14:00 to 20:00 and on Sundays from 10:00 to 15:00.

Museum of the Americas: a National museum that holds artistic, archaeological and ethnographic collections from the whole American continent, ranging from the Paleolithic period to the present day.  Free on Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Cerralbo Museum: This museum houses the collection of Enrique de Aguilera y Gamboa, Marquis of Cerralbo, who died in 1922.  Free on Thursdays from 17:00 to 20:00 (extraordinary opening), Saturdays from 14:00 to 15:00 and Sundays from 10:00 to 15:00.

Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales: A royal monastery located in Madrid.  Free on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 16:00 to 18:30 for citizens of the EU and Latin America.

Royal Monastery of the Incarnation: A convent of the order of Recolet Augustines.  Free on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 16:00 to 18:30 for citizens of the EU and Latin America.

Lázaro Galdiano Museum: The Museum of Lázaro Galdiano houses the art collection of José Lázaro GaldianoFree last hour of every day, that is, from Monday to Saturday from 15:30 and Sundays from 14:00.

Museum of Decorative Arts: Free on Thursdays from 15:00 to 20:00 and on Sundays from 10:00 to 15:00.

Museum of Romanticism: The Museum of Romanticism is an art museum inaugurated in 1924 as Museo Romántico. It is housed in a late eighteenth-century building. The building was declared Bien de Interés Cultural in 1962.  Free Saturdays from 14:00 to 20:20 and Sundays from 10:00 to 15:00.

Costume Museum: The Museo del Traje is devoted to fashion and costumes. The museum has over 160,000 pieces and documents. Free on Saturdays from 14:30 to 19:00 and Sundays from 10:00 to 15:00.

Palacio Real de Madrid (Palacio de Oriente): The Royal Palace of Madrid is the official residence of the Spanish Royal Family in the city of Madrid, but it is only used for state ceremonies.  Free from Monday to Thursday between 18:00 and 20:00 for citizens of the EU and Latin America.

Royal Palace of El Pardo: The Royal Palace of El Pardo is a historic building near Madrid, Spain, in the present-day district of Fuencarral-El Pardo.  Free Wednesdays and Thursdays from 17:00 to 20:00 for citizens of the EU and Latin America.

Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando: Currently functioning as a museum and gallery, the academy was established by royal decree in 1744.  Free on Wednesdays.

ABC Museum of Drawing and Illustration: Positioned in the heart of Madrid, a 1900 building that once housed the Mahou beer brewery now accommodates this innovative cultural space.  Opened from Tuesday to Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Closed on Mondays.

Mint Museum: Opened from Tuesday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 10:00 to 14:00. Closed on Mondays.

Museum Geominero: A museum housing minerals, rocks and fossils in a grand central hall with balconies and a glass roof.  Opened every day from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Museum of San Isidro: Free museum relating city’s history back to the Paleolithic period via artifacts, maps & paintings.  Opened from Tuesday to Sunday and holidays from 9:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Closed on Mondays.

ICO Museum: Modern gallery for art, architecture & design exhibitions, plus lectures, workshops & guided tours.  Opened from Tuesday to Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sundays and holidays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Closed on Mondays.

Casa Museo Lope de Vega: The House-Museum of Lope de Vega is a writer’s house museum in the former home of the “golden age” writer Lope de Vega, located in Madrid, Spain. The sixteenth-century house was bought by the writer in 1610.  Necessary to reserve by  telephone 91 429 92 16. Visiting hours are Tuesday to Sunday between 10:00 and 15:00.
