Amazonia

Swinging from trees like Tarzan!

Yesterday I took my 15 year old hormonal son to Aventura Amazonia Cercedilla. The weather was a little dodgy, it looked like it was about to rain at any moment, and I have to say my heart started to race a little when I let myself think about the possibility of a storm. You see, I am a little “frightened” of thunder and lightening having experience a nasty storm many years ago which has left me somewhat phobic. Anyway, to get back to the point, (I am a natural deviator...), the drive from Madrid took as around 45 minutes. We took the M607 and drove through some spectacular countryside to get to Cercedilla, a charming rustic village set in the Sierra, close to the Puerto de Navacerrada. The drive alone was worth it. When we arrived at the adventure park we were met by young team of fit people who first fitted us with the necessary equipment and then took us through a 20 minute training session about how behave like an ape in the trees SAFELY. Following this we were let loose amongst the 6 circuits which range from easy to darn right impossible! As my son is not yet 16 we were only permitted to tackle 4 circuits. The “Deportiva” and “XTrem” circuits are reserved for adults of 16 and over (and quite frankly I understand why!). So we started off on the “Explorador” circuit, categorised as easy. Now, I consider myself a fairly fit person but even on this easy circuit you need to have elastic limbs! This circuit took about 40 minutes to complete and by the time Adam and I finished it we were absolutely knackered.

We decided to take a mini break and headed off for a soft drink. Located next to the Amazonia Adventure Park is the Ayuntamiento de Cercedilla’s open air swimming pool (open from mid June to September) and adjoining cafeteria. The cafeteria is open all year but during the autumn and winter months it only opens at weekends. Adam and I had a snack and a drink in this open air cafe and chatted to the charming owner for a while. The drinks and food were good value and really surprisingly good too. Batteries recharged, we headed back to the trees. This time we decided to tackle a harder circuit. The “Adventure” circuit was a little busy so we went to the “Jungle” circuit which was all ours. This circuit was categorised a “Medium” difficulty and estimated to take 30 minutes to complete. Adam went ahead of me and I followed. By now, although a little tired, I was feeling quite confident about trying this slighlty harder circuit. Once up in the trees it started to rain a little. Okay, so I don’t mind a little rain but it wasn’t long before I started to hear the rumble of thunder in the distance!! My heart started to pound and I started to look for the nearest escape route out of the trees before being hit by lightening. The Amazonia monitors who are dotted around the park ensuring that people are complying with the rules and are safely harnessed at all times reassured me that the storm wasn’t electric and therefore not a danger, needless to say this didn’t make a blind bit of difference to how I felt! Unfortunately I couldn’t see any ladder near enough to me to calm me down so, having voiced my concerns to my son who thought I was being absolutely ridiculous, I decided to try and complete the circuit as quickly as possible. I completed it within record time!!! Once out of the trees, two circuits behind us, Adam and I decided that we were too tired to try another circuit so we returned our equipment, said our thank you for a really fun afternoon, because after all it really was a lot of fun (storm and all), and we dashed back to the car because it started to pour down with rain.
Amazonia is a fabulous day out for the whole family, children and adults alike. The circuits are suitable for children from ages 6 and up but naturally children are limited to circuits appropriate for their age range. It’s advisable to check the weather before going, and take protective gloves because your hands do suffer and get pretty raw. Sporty, stretchy clothing is advisable. Be prepared to crawl, climb, jump, swing, scream, laugh, and get dirty! You need to make reservations by phone or through the Amazonia website. http://www.aventura-amazonia-cercedilla.com/ I for one will be going back to tackle some of the harder circuits and conquer my fear of heights
